Air pollution concerns

Concern has been raised over the air quality of Beijing and its potential effect on the athletes. Although the Beijing Municipal Government, in its bid file in 2001, committed to lowering air pollution, increasing environmental protection, and introducing environmental technology, research data show that even if the city were to dramatically cut down its emissions, pollution would still drift over from neighboring provinces, from which 50 percent of Beijing's air is believed to originate. At current levels, air pollution is at least 2 to 3 times higher than levels deemed safe by the World Health Organization. Marco Cardinale of the British Olympic Association has stated that air pollution coupled with heat and humidity makes it "very unlikely we'll see outstanding performances in endurance sports." Despite this, Beijing committed to remove 60,000 taxis and buses from the roads by the end of 2007 and relocate 200 local factories, including a prominent steel factory, before the games begin. The Chinese government has provided assurances that "blue skies are a requirement not only for Beijing, but also for the places around it." The United States Olympic Committee has also expressed its assurance that the air quality of Beijing will not be a concern for the U.S. delegation to the games. Nevertheless, the IOC's medical commission recently analyzed air-quality data recorded by the Beijing Environment Protection Bureau in August, when test athletic events were held in the Chinese capital. The commission found that outdoor endurance events -- defined as those that include at least an hour of continuous, high-intensity physical effort -- may pose some risk.

In spite of such efforts, several countries have indicated that their athletes will arrive at the games as late as possible to limit exposure to pollution. Many teams have set up offshore training camps in Japan and South Korea to avoid the pollution.

In early July, Beijing ordered 40 factories in Tianjin and 300 factories in Tangshan, two cities close to the capital, to begin suspending operations in an effort to reduce air pollution. A major temporary air pollution control plan began on July 20, that included shutting additional factories as well as using odd-even license plate restrictions that limited Beijing motorists to driving on alternate days, depending on whether the last number on their license plate is odd or even, in order to reduce daily traffic by two million vehicles. Despite the program, by July 28 the China Daily reported that Beijing's skies remained alarmingly polluted and that authorities are considering emergency measures during the Games.

Weather forecasting

Meteorological findings in April 2007 also have suggested that, based on rainfall data from the past 30 years, there is a 50 percent chance of rain for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. To combat the chance of poor weather, Beijing officials plan to seed clouds to induce rain several days before the games begin by shooting thousands of silver iodide pellets into the air using ground-based rockets. While the effectiveness of this method is questionable, Beijing is optimistic that it will reduce the chance of rainfall during the games, and planned to carry out several tests as a practice in the summer of 2007, one year before the games begin. Officials have also stated that inducing rain should also remove some of the pollution from the air.

Water and drought history

The water coming out of the water plants is safe, according to Bi Xiaogang of the Beijing Water Management Bureau. The process of transporting the water throughout the city is what contaminates it. Beijing is suffering from a drought of 15 years as well as a lack of major fresh water sources elsewhere, so many locals drink bottled water instead of that from the tap. Officials of the city water authority have ensured, however, that "the safety and efficiency of the water system" will be maintained and that the recycled water supplied to the Olympic Village will be as clean as tap water.

Following recent scares regarding the safety of food products manufactured in China, the United States Olympic Committee has decided to import food for its athletes. In particular, athletes were concerned that eating meat that was raised in China could contain enough steroids to cause the athletes to test positive for steroid use. The United States Olympic Committee's plan to bring its own food to China has disappointed the leader of food services for the Beijing Olympics. Several Canadian athletes have received permission to do the same.

Algal bloom

With less than six weeks before it plays host to the Olympic sailing regatta, the city of Qingdao has mobilized thousands of people and an armada of small boats to clean up an algae bloom, the result of a red tide, that is choking large stretches of the coastline and threatening to impede the Olympic competition. Approximately one third of the waters where Olympic events are supposed to take place are affected; this has prompted China to mobilize 20,000 people to clean up and the state media reported that 100,000 tons of algae had already been taken out of the water. Much of it was being transported to farms as feed for pigs and other animals, according to news reports. Officials claim that poor water quality is "not a substantial" link to the current bloom. And by the time of the start of the sailing races in Qingdao ,the algae had been cleaned up.

Locust prevention

More than 33,000 exterminators have been dispatched to battle a locust infestation in northern China. Under the plan, some 200 tonnes of pesticides, 100,000 sprayers and four airplanes are being used to kill the pests.

Oil slick

A 2 km² (0.77 sq mi) oil slick was discovered off the coast of Qingdao. Officials said that the oil would not affect Olympic sailing. The oil slick was discovered around mid-August(19/8/2008).

National teams will not enter in Latin alphabetical order, but in stroke count with the Simplified Chinese characters. For example, this will place Australia (澳大利亚) in 203rd position, just ahead of Zambia (赞比亚) because the character 澳 is written in 15 strokes and 赞 is in 16 strokes, while Italy will perform as 191st nation. Stroke count order is a traditional method to order names and other things.

The South Korean Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) leaked parts of the opening ceremony through secret shooting, disregarding the prohibition of the Organising Committee. The video was uploaded at YouTube on July 30, 2008, but had been deleted soon after its upload. However, several other videos are uploaded by many users.

Producers

Organizers of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games chose famed Chinese film maker Zhang Yimou and Zhang Jigang as co-directors of the opening and closing ceremonies. In 2006 the Beijing Organizing Committee (BOCOG) initially chose American film maker Steven Spielberg, Yves Pepin, head of the French entertainment group ECA2, and Sydney Games opening ceremony director Ric Birch as special consultants. In February 2008, Spielberg pulled out of his role as advisor in protest over China’s continuing support of the Sudanese government and the escalating violence in the Darfur region.

Performers

It has been announced that Canada's Celine Dion and Taiwan's Jay Chou would perform during the opening ceremony.

Gillian Chung was originally scheduled to be a performer at the opening ceremony. Due to the Edison Chen photo scandal, director Zhang Yimou had replaced her and another Hong Kong star (not involved in the photo incident) with PRC C-pop act A-One.

A troupe of over a hundred Indigenous Taiwanese dancers travelling from Taiwan, and refered to by Xinhua as "ethnic Taiwanese compatriots", will also perform at the opening ceremony.

Boycott

The idea of a boycott of the opening ceremony has been promoted by protesters and discussed by a number of heads of state. Most notably, French President Nicolas Sarkozy raised the possibility that he might not attend in protest over the treatment of Tibetan protesters, but on 4 July 2008, he announced he would attend. George W. Bush had announced the previous day that he would be attending, and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has also declared he will attend. Leaders from a few other countries, including Estonia, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic have declared they will be participating in a boycott of the opening ceremony. Others, like Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, have announced that, although they will not be attending the ceremony, their decision is not related to politics and they are not participating in any boycott.

Symbols

Emblem

The 2008 Summer Olympics emblem is known as Dancing Beijing (simplified Chinese: 舞动的北京) designed by Guo Chunning. The emblem combines a traditional Chinese red seal and a representation of the calligraphic character jīng (京, "national capital", also the second character of Beijing's Chinese name) with athletic features. The open arms of the calligraphic word symbolizes the invitation of China to the world to share in its culture. IOC president Jacques Rogge was very happy with the emblem, saying, "Your new emblem immediately conveys the awesome beauty and power of China which are embodied in your heritage and your people."

Slogan

The slogan for the 2008 Olympics is "One World, One Dream" (simplified Chinese: 同一个世界 同一个梦想; traditional Chinese: 同一個世界 同一個夢想; pinyin: Tóng Yíge Shìjiè Tóng Yíge Mèngxiǎng.) The slogan calls upon the whole world to join in the Olympic spirit and build a better future for humanity. It was chosen from over 210,000 entries submitted from around the world.

Mascot

The official 2008 Olympic Mascots are the five Fuwa (simplified Chinese: 福娃, literally "good luck dolls"). The Fuwa consist of five members that incorporate fish, giant panda, fire, Tibetan antelope, and swallow designs. The Fuwa each have as their primary color one of the colors of the five Olympic Rings that stand for the five continents. The five Fuwa are named Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. When the first syllable of each of the five names are said together, the result is the phrase 北京欢迎你 (Běijīng huānyíng nĭ) which means "Beijing welcomes you".

Tickets

In April 2007, over seven million tickets for sporting events and ceremonies went on sale. Approximately 75% of tickets went on sale through the Beijing Organizing Committee, which set low ticket prices for domestic tickets, to encourage the Chinese people to attend the Games. International tickets are available through each nation's NOC. By June 2007, 2.2 million tickets had already been sold. The last round of some 250,000 tickets were on sale in Beijing on July 25, 2008. Long lines were formed the day before at the ticket office including many who slept overnight. Another 570,000 tickets for football matches are up for grabs in co-host cities just weeks before the opening.

Merchandising

Stores selling merchandise

Since early 2007, licensed Olympics merchandise stores have been in business throughout China. More than 800 official stores were in operation at the end of July 2007. Since August 2007, Olympic merchandise has been made available online, with more than 5000 products available via the official merchandising website, which include apparel, mascot dolls, key-chains and commemorative chopsticks. In November 2007, the overseas Olympic E-shop provided online access to customers all over the world to Licensed Products of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, excluding the USA, Japan, UK, Canada and China.

Bank notes

The China's central bank issued a new 10-yuan note without the picture of Mao Zedong featuring a Greek discus thrower and the the Bird's Nest.[12][13] A total of 6 million notes were released at 10 yuan (US$1.46). Another 4 million notes were released in Hong Kong as a special-edition note at HK$20 (US$2.56) before the official release on July 15, 2008. Of the 4 million notes, 3.76 million of them were sold in Hong Kong, with the remainder sold to Macau and the overseas community, ranging from HK$138 to HK$1,338. Thousands of people formed long lines outside the Hong Kong Bank of China branch, more than 48 hours before the notes were issued.

Music

Theme songs

The official song for the game's one-year countdown celebration was "We Are Ready". The song was sung by an ensemble of 133 artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. The song is composed by Hong Kong songwriter Peter Kam (金培達) with lyrics by Keith Chen (陳少琪).
Torch relay songs

The official theme for the torch relay was "Light the Passion, Share the Dream", with the English version performed by the 106 contestants of Miss World 2007. Another song to accompany the relay is "Red around the world" composed by Wyman Wong with lyrics by Albert Leung. The song also happens to be the new Coca cola promotional song. Individual versions are available for different artists such as Jacky Cheung, S.H.E, Wilber Pan.

Twenty-eight different sports are represented by 28 mainland China singers in a promotion video and song called "In Magnificent Shape to Uphold the Dream".
