Ion Ivanovici (alternatively, Iosif Ivanovici, Josef Ivanovici) (born 1845 in Timişoara, died September 28, 1902 in Bucharest) was a Romanian military band leader and composer. He wrote over 350 dance pieces and marches, but today his only work known to the public is "The Waves of the Danube", which became well known as the popular song "Oh, How we Danced on the Night we were Wed".
The Danube Waves (Romanian: Valurile Dunării) a waltz by Ion Ivanovici is perhaps the most famous Romanian tune in the world. It was performed at the 1889 Paris Exposition and took the audience by storm.
The waltz has become extremely widely known around the world. In the US it is most often known only as the Anniversary Song thanks to addition of words and an arrangement attributed to Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin. It features in the film The Jolson Story.
The melody of the Waves of the Danube is well known in Korea thanks to the famous soprano Youn Shim-Deok. It is known there as The Psalm of Death.
