Mesageria instant (Instant messaging, IM) este o formă de comunicare în timp real între două sau mai multe persoane cu ajutorul textelor tipărite. Textul este transportat printr-un dispozitiv conectat într-o reţea, de ex. Internet.

Este important de înţeles că ce diferenţiază chatul şi MI de tehnologii precum email este sincronicitatea comunicării. Chatul se petrece în timp real sub ochii tăi. Unele sisteme permit trimiterea de mesaje către persoane care nu sunt online (mesaje offline), micşorând astfel mult din diferenţa între email şi MI-

Multe servere au opţiuni suplimentare precum primirea automată a înştiinţării sau replici, chat în grup, servicii de conferinţă (inclusiv voce şi video), fişier de logare şi transfer a conversaţiei, etc.

MI permite comunicarea efectivă şi eficientă. În anumite cazuri, MI implică şi alte opţiuni suplimentare care îl fac şi mai popular, precum posibilitatea de a vedea partenerul de discuţii cu ajutorul camerei web, sau discuţii direct prin Internet.
