Istoria politică narează şi analizează evenimentele, ideile şi liderii politici.[1] Ea este structurată de obicei în jurul statului naţiune. Este distinctă dar are legătură cu alte domenii din istorie precum istoria socială, istoria economică, şi istoria militară.

În general istoria politică se focalizează pe evenimente legate de statele-naţiune şi pe procesele politice formale. Conform lui Hegel, istoria politică "este o idee a statului cu o forţă morală şi spirituală deasupra intereselor materiale ale subiecţilor: rezultă că statul este principalul agent al schimbării istorice"[2] Aceasta contrastează cu, de exemplu, istoria socială, care se focalizează predominant pe acţiunile şi stilul de viaţă ale oamenilor obişnuiţi,[3] sau cu istoria oamenilor, a cărei perspectivă sunt oamenii obşnuiţi.
