Înregistrarea este un proces de captare a datelor sau translatare a informaţiilor într-un format stocat pe un mediu de stocare.

Înregistrări ale evenimentelor s-au realizat de mii de ani într-o formă sau alta. Printre cele mai vechi forme de înregistrare se cunosc picturile murale, alfabetul runic, şi idogramele.

Modalităţi de înregistrare a textelor pentru a fi citite de oameni includ scrierea acestora pe hârtie. Alte forme de stocare a datelor sunt mai uşor de citit pentru sistemele automate, dar oamenii au nevoie de anumite instrumente specifice pentru a le citi. Listarea la imprimantă a unui text stocat într-un calculator permite păstrarea unei copii pe calculator şi totodată a unei copii care poate fi citită de oameni fără ajutorul instrumentelor.

Dezvoltarea tehnologiă oferă continuu şi extinde mijloacele de reprezentare, înregistrare şi exprimare a gândurilor, simţămintelor şi experienţelor fiinţelor umane.
