This year the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath, "for studies on the structure and function of the ribosome which showed that the peptidyl transferase was an RNA catalyzed reaction, and for revealing the mechanism of inhibition of this function by antibiotics".
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 awarded Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien "for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP".
