Operation Cast Lead

An ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas which accelerated in the last few days of 2008 when Israel responded to an increase in rocket and mortar fire by launching a series of airstrikes, known as Operation Cast Lead (Hebrew: מבצע עופרת יצוקה‎, Mivtza Oferet Yetzukah), against targets in the Gaza Strip. Medical officials say at least 437 Palestinians have been killed, including at least 75 children, and 2,250 have been injured. Four Israelis have been killed in the same period by Palestinian rockets. International reactions on the conflict have either condemned the Israeli operation, or the Hamas rocket attacks (prior to, and after the operation), or both. Many countries and organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire and have expressed concern for the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. (Wikipedia)
