Among the Greeks and Italians Saint Nicholas is a favourite of sailors, fishermen, ships and sailing. As such he has become over time the patron saint of several cities maintaining harbours. In centuries of Greek folklore, Nicholas was seen as "The Lord of the Sea", often described by modern Greek scholars as a kind of Christianised version of Poseidon.

1:1 Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the purpose of God, and Sosthenes the brother,
6:1 How is it, that if any one of you has a cause at law against another, he takes it before a Gentile judge and not before the saints?
6:2 Is it not certain that the saints will be the judges of the world? if then the world will be judged by you, are you unable to give a decision about the smallest things?

9:1 But there is no need for me to say anything in my letter about the giving to the saints:
9:2 For I have before made clear to those of Macedonia my pride in your ready mind, saying to them that Achaia has been ready for a year back; and a great number have been moved to do the same by your example.
