Automotive history is generally divided into a number of eras based on the major design and technology shifts seen over the last century. History of the automobiles

The automobile powered by the Otto gasoline engine was invented in Germany by Karl Benz in 1885. Even though Karl Benz is credited with the invention of the modern automobile, several German engineers worked on building automobiles at the same time.
